Vestal traditionally has been the dwelling place for workers of nearby employers IBM, Lockheed Martin and Endicott Johnson. It is the largest retail center and home to many shopping centers and malls in the area. Besides Route 434, other roads passing through Vestal include Routes 17, 26 and 201. Nearby Binghamton Airport provides regular service to Detroit, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Many of these shops are located on Route 434. The town's central business district has a number of historical buildings situated on Front Street.
