What a Move to Stroudsburg Has to Offer
Stroudsburg is a borough in and the county seat of Monroe County, Pennsylvania, about 5 miles from the eastern border of the state with New Jersey, in the Pocono Mountains region. Populated by roughly 6,000 residents, Stroudsburg was founded in 1799 by Col. Jacob Stroud, a royalist soldier in the French and Indian War and later a prominent businessman. Col. Stroud built a house in about 1795 for his son, John, which still stands today and is now the Monroe County Historical Association.
Many other historical buildings in Stroudsburg date to the mid-19th century and are of Colonial Revival, Romanesque Revival, Bungalow/American Craftsman or Queen Anne styles. Over 180 of these lie in the Academy Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Monroe County Courthouse, dating from 1890 and constructed of ashlar sandstone and limestone, is another such building listed in the registry.
William Wallace and Thomas Kitson built up a textile business in the borough in the late 1800s that was originally water-powered and later by steam. The business set a world record on May 18, 1898, by making a full suit of clothes from the wool of an unsheared sheep in just six hours and four minutes. Later, the Holland Thread company took over the textile complex, and today, the Holland Thread Apartments are a historical site in the borough that has been renovated into residential lofts.
Downtown Stroudsburg features many antique stores, art galleries, restaurants and specialty shops, as well as the Sherman Theater, built in 1928 and opened with a live performance by comedians Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Today, the theater serves as a venue for national touring acts and musicians.
