What a Move to Stoughton Has to Offer

Stoughton is a town of about 27,000 residents in Norfolk County, about 16 miles from Boston. Officially incorporated in 1726, the town at that time included what are today the towns of Sharon, Canton and Avon. The town is named after William Stoughton, who was the first chief justice of the Massachusetts colonial courts and the notorious chief justice of the Salem Witch Trials, as well as being a lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and the acting governor for six years, from 1694 to 1699.

Originally, Stoughton was an agricultural community, but as time went on it became a center for shoemaking. More than 50 houses built prior to 1824 still stand in Stoughton. The Stoughton Historical Society at Park Street documents most of these and is itself listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stoughton is the home of the oldest choral society in the United States, the Old Stoughton Musical Society, founded in 1786. The Society performed at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 to crowds of thousands of people and still performs today.

Stoughton's train station is the only one in Massachusetts to feature a clock tower. It was built in 1888 from stones quarried in the town and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1988, more than a million dollars was spent to restore the station, and it is projected that a second track of service will be added by 2024.

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, and anarchist Nicola Sacco, of the famous Sacco and Vanzetti trial, both lived in Stoughton at one time.
