What a Move to Portsmouth Has to Offer

Portsmouth is a seaport city of approximately 21,000 residents in Rockingham County, on the harbor of the Piscataqua River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city was recently home to the Pease Air Force Base, which today is the Portsmouth International Airport. Portsmouth was named in honor of John Mason, who was the captain of the port of Portsmouth in the county of Hampshire, England, after which the U.S. city and state, respectively, are named. After early battles with the local Indians, English colonists settled the area and built fishing, lumber, and shipbuilding industries.

In 1774, Paul Revere rode to Portsmouth to warn the city's colonists that British warships were headed to the port. Captive slaves helped defend the city, and New Hampshire soon effectively abolished slavery by about 1810.

In 1849 the city was incorporated formally, and during this time a great deal of business was done through the port, enriching many local businessmen, who built grand mansions and houses, a number of which are historical sites and museums today. Many of these homes were built of brick or stone due to ordinances passed after several devastating fires, the worst of which was in 1813 when 244 buildings burned. In 2008, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Portsmouth one of its "Dozen Distinctive Destinations."

A good number of famous people have made their homes in Portsmouth, including U.S. Senator Daniel Webster, scientist Benjamin Thompson, author Thomas Bailey Aldrich, architect William Harrison Folsom, philanthropist Brooke Astor, singer Tom Rush, and naval hero and "father of the U.S. Navy" John Paul Jones, whose house now serves as the Portsmouth Historical Society Museum.
