What a Move to Franklin Has to Offer

Located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, the city of Franklin contains 33,000 people and is the site of the nation's first library. Housed in the library are books donated by Benjamin Franklin, the city’s namesake, who is featured on the city's seal. Curiously, the seal reads "The Town of Franklin," rather than "The City of Franklin;" this is because Franklin residents wished to have the words "The Town of" appended to the city's name (despite the fact that the government is structures as a city). This is one of 14 such cases in Massachusetts whereby a municipality has successfully petitioned to have this phrase appended to its legal name.

Franklin is also the birthplace of Horace Mann, a noted educator and the father of American public education. Coincidentally, Franklin is the site of what is arguably the oldest one-room schoolhouse in America, known as the "Red Brick School," which was built in 1792 and was in continuous operation until 2008.

Franklin is home to the largest Catholic parish in the Boston Archdiocese, with roughly 15,000 parishioners. The city is home to St. Mary's Catholic Church, which was designed by Matthew Sullivan, a noted architect of landmark churches in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Franklin lies within the Charles River and Blackstone River watersheds. Much of the marshland, particularly along Mine Brook, is protected under the Natural Valley Storage Project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. There are a series of protected lakes, known as the Franklin Reservoir, which belong to the city but are not used as a public drinking-water supply. Another body of water, Beaver Pond, is used for fishing and swimming and features a man-made beach, recreational fields and playgrounds on its banks. There are public parks and forests in the city, such as Franklin Town and Franklin State Forests, and nature preserves are not lacking.
