What a Move to Enfield Has to Offer

Enfield is a town of roughly 45,000 residents on the northern border of Hartford County, Connecticut, adjacent to Massachusetts. It was formed by the merger of three smaller towns: the former Enfield, Thompsonville and Hazardville, the latter named after Colonel Augustus George Hazard, who founded a gunpowder company that operated in the Powder Hollow area of town. The name also may have been appropriate because more than 60 men died from explosive accidents during the company's history.

The other famous historical industry of Enfield was carpeting, and businessman Orrin Thompson set up his firm, Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co., in the district that is named after him, Thompsonville.

Enfield was the site of several important religious meetings in the 18th and 19th centuries. Minister Jonathan Edwards preached his famous sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" in Enfield, and this was an important event in the Great Awakening of American revivalists. Later, in 1872 and 1873, Adventist Christians held key meetings on King's Island in the Connecticut River, which partially lies within Enfield.

The current neighborhoods of Enfield are Hazardville, Thompsonville, Southwood Acres, Shaker Pines, Sherwood Manor, Crescent Lake, North Thompsonville, Enfield Historical District, Scitico and the Presidential Section. Many 18th- and 19th-century homes lie within the Enfield Historical District, which runs along King Street/Enfield Street. This district is listed in the National Register of Historic Districts.

Enfield is the location of the U.S. headquarters of children's toymaker Lego, the world's largest toymaker by market value. It is the third-largest employer in the town after Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance and Hallmark Cards.
