What a Move to North Wales Has to Offer
North Wales is a borough suburb of Philadelphia in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. With a population of roughly 3,200 people, North Wales is one of three population centers that comprise the North Penn Valley, in addition to nearby Hatfield and Lansdale. Because more people are moving to the region, many residents and businesses with North Wales addresses actually are located in one of the adjoining townships.
North Wales was settled by Welsh immigrants to the region and named after a town in Wales, England, with the same name. Originally an agricultural village within the Gwynedd Township, the borough incorporated land from what was part of the historic 1702 land grant made to state founder William Penn by King Charles II of England.
The borough's Main Street was originally an Indian trail, and today it serves as a connection to Routes 309 and 202 and to the Northeastern Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In the mid-1800s, railroads were established, and the borough quickly grew around the railroad station, which was built in the 1870s. North Wales restored the station in 2010, and today, North Wales is served by SEPTA, Philadelphia's passenger rail network.
Many of the stately homes along South Main Street were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and have been restored or well maintained since then. The North Wales Historic Preservation District was established in 2000 to help preserve the borough's historic architecture.
North Wales contains a number of parks, including Weingartner Park, Wee Walers Park, Second Street Park, Ninth Street Park, Fourth Street Park and Eighth Street Park, where you can find playgrounds, tennis courts and athletic fields.
John Oates, of the popular musical group Hall & Oates, and singer Sharon Little were both raised in North Wales.
