Farmers settled in what’s now known as Gaithersburg in 1765, naming their community Log Town. Benjamin Gaither married the daughter of one of the first settlers and opened a store. When the railroad came through in the 1850s, the town received its official name of Gaithersburg. It’s generally regarded as a suburb of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area. Gaithersburg’s population of more than 64,000 is served by various forms of public transportation, including rail and bus service within the city as well as to nearby urban areas.

Nearly 40 percent of Gaithersburg’s households include children under the age of 18. They receive their education from 19 elementary schools, 7 middle schools and 3 high schools. The city recreation facilities include 25 parks and public areas offering athletic fields, water activities, gym and fitness centers and performance stages.
